My first jazz show! And it was awesome! Harry is a hottie: he sings hot, he plays his music hot, he moves hot… whoohoo! Great backing band filled with lots of talented musicians. Guitarist JJJ (I can’t remember his real name! must.. go.. find!!) was absolutely amazing, trombonist “Luscious” Lucian (have to find this guy’s name too) plays a mean trombone and sings in a voice that harks back to a spry young Louis Armstrong. Great tunes, great energy. The Kodak Theater itself was also really nice, although it was very strange that it was in a mall. The seating arrangement is also really vertical, which is a little scary. We got there a little late, and I found myself worrying about taking a tumble into a lower mezzanine since I was walking in really wobbly heels. 0_o. All in all, a grand old time. Hooray for N’awlins style jazz! ;D
i love kylie!!
joy of the day: I dug up my old kylie minogue tapes from when I was like, 8 years old!
dooo the locomotion with me!!
continuing the kylie fixation…
j u k e d . c o m – [Can’t Get You Outta My Head]
it’s a bit of a gross story, but it’s quite hilarious. I’ve been posting a lot of stories about kylie minogue in recent weeks… can you blame me?! how cool is it that a kylie, whom I totally loved when I was 10 years old is suddenly hot again?! And, quite frankly, she’s a breath of fresh air in this stagnant pop music scene. Pop music is trying so hard to be substantial and “expressive” these days — refer to Britney’s “I’m not a girl…” fiasco, mariah carey’s last couple of albums and jarnet jackson’s latest — that it’s about time a pop diva arrived on scene to just say “LET’S HAVE FUN!” sure, J. Lo tries to do this, but let’s face it: the woman can’t sing, and for all the production in the world, she still completely fails to give any life to her songs. the woman fucking does poor karaoke to her own songs. Now, listen to the way kylie’s voice melds and becomes part of what she sings, but has its own identity. on the album, her voice goes from sexpot porn star to sweetly girlish to empowered feminity. So what if some of the stuff she sings is a little risque? So what if some of the lyrics are on the cheesy side from time to time? Kylie does her mostest to do her job as an entertainer, her producers do some terrific work in the studio, and she fills out those beats and works her voice to them better than anyone out there on the scene right now.
so for all those music snobs who diss on pop music, realize that there IS some decent stuff out there, remember that music is SUPPOSED to be fun, and production in the studios is STILL a sort of musical prowess. Just because a singer can sing but can’t write her own stuff doesn’t mean she sucks, just because she’s overproduced doesn’t make it automatically evil. There’s a whole bunch of crap out there right now, but don’t just turn your nose and write something off when something comes along that’s actually good~!!!!!!!!!
hooray for kylie minogue.

Dashboard Confessionals at the House of Blues, W. Hollywood
what an amazing band. what an amazing live show. I think this show has had the best energy since those U2 concerts I went to last fall. at no other show did the audience (a completely SOLD OUT audience) sing along to nearly every song with such emotion. it’s amazing to see people connect with art so well…
great audience interaction, great musicianship: the drummer was terrific and fun to watch, the guitar licks were tasty, the bassist and the lead guitarists were great with the audience… it was truly a fan’s show, and every song was a knockout. A+!
openers were mediocre. the first band’s name I don’t even remember, the third band — anniversary — was severely disappointing. they had some sound issues, but all in all, I couldn’t get into their music, which seemed kind of bland, though noisy, nor were they particularly fun to watch. unfortunately, these were the longest openers. the crowd was quite glad to see them off the stage.
the exception to the mediocre quality of the openers was ben kweller. kweller started off with a rocked out version of vanilla ice’s infamous anthem, “ice ice baby” with more funked out attitude and chilled out drawl than the iceman himself. afterward, a backing band arrived on stage and accompanied him in an all too short (maybe 6 song?) set filled with funky melodies and interesting harmonies.
what a neat emo night. =)

BOY does johnny reznick know how to write a good hook!!!
oh goodness! I forgot to update music since my birthday! two new additions to my cd collection:
kylie – fever
the first one (the one I specifically requested since that “outta my head” song was, well, being true to its name) was kylie minogue’s new album fever. remember kylie? I was a fan of her back when she made her debut in the 1988. 1988!!! that’s what, fourteen years ago?? my gosh. anyway, she’s still been around, constantly reinventining herself. she’s the australian madonna!
her reintroduction to American audiences pushes her new even more hot-sexified image,* from the J. Lo style dress she wears in the video for “outta my head,” the pictures in the liner notes, to the porn style way she performs some of her songs. and oh yeah, kylie sings too. Fever is a shameless dance/pop album.. but a really GOOD shameless dance/pop album. each track is at once infectious and funky, tricking out with the computerized synth beats and effects while filling out with sexy bass grooves and 70s style anthemic disco funk. it gets a little over the top at certain points, especially with the cheesy “give it to me.” however, that one major misstep is made up for tenfold by the rest of the CD, especially by standouts “love at first sight,” “outta my head,” and “in your eyes.”
avalanches: since i left you
I’ve taken a couple of listens so far, and it’s EXCELLENT. each song is a dizzying amalgam of a crazy assortment of samples — of random music, tv shows, movies.. I heard something like 10,000 different samples?! — but this mixup madness somehow makes for glorious music. I haven’t listened to closely to this cd just yet (haha, I’ve been in a cheesy pop mood, if you couldn’t tell), but i’ll update this review after I do. =)
footnotes:
*kylie’s image for the album right before this one, light years, which came out during the sydney olympics, made full use of her amazing legs and ass-revealing boy shorts. this is how mariah carey SHOULD have worn her “loverboy” era daisy dukes.
song of the hour: suede
song of the hour: suede – everything will flow
So you’ve got your candy pop music, your sappy ballads…. but then you come back to a quality piece of musical goodness with a song like this. =) hallelujah for suede.
