there’s a desolation in that song that seems to fit the mood of this terribly sad day.

hooray for britpop. counting down to travis… :)

new music discoveries for today:
a song my friend told me about yesterday was stroke 9 – kick some ass. it’s a bouncy song (you know, like their other song “little black backpack”) with some funny lyrics, which I’ll refrain from posting here. I’ll let you discover them on your own.

I’ve discovered secondspin.com, a site that specializes in selling used cds, as you can probably infer from the name. second spin has a pretty good selection, with lots of really good deals on those older cds i’ve always wanted but never got around to picking up. I’ve found cds I wanted for as low as 1.99.. and it looks like prices get about as high as 7.99 or so for an older used cd. double cds cost a few bucks more, but still make for quite a good deal. surprisingly, shipping is not expensive at all! I purchased four cds for about 24 bucks, and after tax and shipping (which was $3 for the whole thing), it came out to about $30. hey, it’s still cheaper than penny lane!

labor day music joys. have

labor day music joys.

have I talked about how much i love labor day countdowns? I swear.. they’re the best thing in radio. I remember getting a crash course introduction to the history of modern rock listening to Live 105’s labor day countdown, 1995, which I taped and listened to over and over for months after. every once in a while, i still pop it in and let all that good music wash over me. :)

anyway, it was a great countdown. I had my eyes opened to peter gabriel, alanis morrissette’s “you oughta know” before that song and the rest of her jagged little pill album inundated the airwaves a year later. I first heard U2’s “sunday, bloody sunday” on the countdown, but failed to get much into it, although I thought the song was pretty cool (little did I know!). I also endured the b-52’s “rock lobster” multiple times while trying to rewind to hear new order’s bizarre love triangle. I wore out the tapes fast forwarding and rewinding to songs like green day – long view. depeche mode – enjoy the silence. breeders – last splash. weezer – say it ain’t so. the cure – just like heaven. radiohead – creep. pearl jam – black. So much good music in one weekend!! I was in heaven.

I only caught bits and pieces of this year’s kroq countdown as we drove to and from san bernadino, but it wasn’t as expansive in its scope as live 105’s… instead of best modern rock songs of all time, this was only the nineties. but it still wasn’t bad: smashing pumpkins – 1979. nirvana – smells like teen spirit. no doubt – don’t speak.

what a wonderful weekend. :) i rediscovered old music gems, and new gem miners like air, chicane, and tiesto. -spazzes out in happiness-

ok, I listened to the michael jackson song another few times and I got over my intial “it’s michael jackson! aaah!!”

I now have a clearer head and I’m realizing that that song is not a michael jackson song at all. where did michael go? since when did the King of Pop deign to such commonplace radio drivel? ok, so he spent $30 million on the new album, came out with about 50 songs, decided on 16 tracks.. and *this* was the single they release? The more I think about it, the more I think his last album, Dangerous, was actually quite good but overlooked. those songs actually endure, and sound like michael, in all his pioneering, “I am michael jackson” glory. and maybe he’s unwilling to go so far out on the line with his new stuff for fear of being laughed away again, but if he doesn’t take that risk, then he can’t ever regain the title, “King of Pop.”

Michael’s music is creative, enduring, and he walks a path only he, as Michael Jackson, can walk. so why is he content to be like everyone else? he doesn’t have to settle for that.

song of the hour: lofidelity

song of the hour: lofidelity allstars – battleflag

in further joyful news, while going to the screening of “O” at the galaxy theater last night, I hit up a tower records clearance sale and got 6 cds I’d wanted for a while for $36! whoohoo!! I got the Depeche Mode best of albums — singles 81-85 and 86-98. I also picked up “this is alice music: vol. 4,” the American Beauty soundtrack, Classic Disney vol. 1, and the Tarzan soundtrack. :) the only catch was with the Tarzan soundtrack — unfortunately I hadn’t noticed that it was the spanish version!! hehhe. but it still sounds good.. and it’s a kick to hear phil collins sing in spanish. :) and actually, they had a lot of copies of the lofidelity allstars cd… I was tempted to get it, but I haven’t heard enough off of it to blow even *more* cash. I am tempted to go back, though. :) The store, which is on Hollywood blvd right next to the Galaxy Theater, across from the El Capitan, is closing in a few days!! so haul ass over there if you’re looking for some good used cd/vhs/ld deals. :)

listening to the dm:singles cds makes me wish I’d gone to the tour supporting it. -clenches hand into a fist and bites knuckles.-

anyway, I also recently discovered a band called “five for fighting.” you can find out more about them here . I’ve downloaded a couple of their songs, and they’re really good! they kind of remind me of the counting crows and vertical horizon… a good balance between the two. songs to hear: superman, easy tonight, bloody mary. I want to hear the rest of the cd now. :)
