you know, one good thing that’s come out of this whole terrorism mess is that there’s much more of a spotlight on how the media covers these sorts of events. now, the nation is paying attention to these sensitive matters of cultural/religious differences, and the media is forced to reflect their audience as accurately as possible or be forced to lose viewership. It’s kinda sad that it takes something like this to get people interested in news and looking at news sensitivity issues, but I guess regardless of what the reasoning behind it is, it’s about time.

my friend blake was riding his new motorcycle about 3 weeks ago when he was hit by a drunk driver going through a red light. the driver tried to get away and dragged him through another three intersections. he’s had his leg amputated, his organs don’t work, etc. read more about it here. I found out about it last thursday, but I didn’t get enough info to email out until sunday… and now with all this madness… -shakes head-
so.. I guess amid all the “please give blood!” pleas (for those on the east coast), I’m making one for my friend. if you’re interested in donating, please message me. there are more details about this further down.

I tried to study tuesday night, but I couldn’t concentrate. I tried to sleep, but I was too scared to. it was so eerie being at the apartment alone. I totally couldn’t deal with it.
final today. time to catch some zz’s.
I read my blog and
I read my blog and i look at the mundane things I talk about. I talk about parties, about eating, about shopping, and about all these trivial things. I talk about spending time with my friends, enoying good company, good music, and gray weather. I talk about having a “good feeling” day… and I realize how precarious our lives really are, and how precious these small moments are. We have the luxury to enjoy our lives, to make merry with our treasured companions, and to be content with the way things are at this moment.
We still possess the moment. We hold each in our hands, bounce it around like the plaything it is, indulge our whims, address our needs, and toss it aside for the next moment. these moments belong to us.
those moments were taken away from more than 10,000 people today. they won’t be able to spend moments with their children, with their families, with their friends, with the hobbies they enjoyed, the posessions they treasured.
each person is that mass of moments. now take those away…
now imagine that happening to 10,000 people dead. those moments could have been shared with their loved ones. how does it affect the lives of the living?
It’s almost too much to bear…
– 50,000 people in the
– 50,000 people in the world trade center.
– at least 400 on those four planes
– how did they coordinate this so well??
8:50am – plane crashes into north wtc
9:10am – plane crashes into south wtc
9:30am – plane crashes into pentagon
sometime after 10am – wtc towers collapse
– it takes about 12 minutes for a plane to get from boston to new york. it must have been hijacked so soon after takeoff…
– is there more??
Today is the anniversary of the camp david accords, 1978. it was a peace treaty between egypt, israel, and jordan.

More updates on my friend.
More updates on my friend. Janet got back to me and emailed me the info on how to donate:
Pearl –
Here is the info to donate blood for Blake. Please forward this message to anyone you know who also may be interested in donating:
Requirements: Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health.
What to do:
1. Call the Red Cross at 1-800-974-2113 to find out where the closest blood donation site is to you and make an appointment to donate (it takes about 45 mins to donate)
2. When you go there to give blood, you must tell them it is a “Teddy Bear donation” on behalf of Blake Harrison. Also, tell them that he is at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in Orange County. (There are two Western Medical Centers in Orange County).
3. You will be able to fill out a card that gets mailed to Blake’s family so that they know that you donated blood for him. Please send it addressed to Blake Harrison at 720 N. Colfax Street La Habra, CA 90631
Thanks so much Pearl!!
love,
Janet
PS – Here is a website Blake’s mom set up so that friends can keep up with his status. The website isn’t quite up-to-date. He has gotten his entire left leg amputated (up to the hip) and now has used about 150 units of blood. The guy who hit him is currently still in jail for DUI, hit-and-run, and has previous warrents for his arrest.
bad news. I heard some
bad news.
I heard some really terrible news last night. dan’s best friend, blake, whom I’ve hung out with a couple of times… great guy) got into a really bad motorcycle accident about two weeks ago. he was practicing riding his new motorcycle on the streets near his house, doing slow rides through the town and such. as he went through one intersection on a green light, a drunk driver in cross-traffic plowed through a red light and hit him side on. the driver didn’t even make any effort to stop — there are no skid marks anywhere — he went ahead and ran through three more intersections, dragging the bike — with blake caught underneath it — along for the ride.
luckily, there were two witnesses: one called 911 right away, and the other chased the driver down until she got stopped by a cop for speeding. at first the cop didn’t believe her, but after he checked his radio, I guess he gave chase as well. it was really lucky for blake that someone called 911 right away; he’d probably be dead now if the paramedics hadn’t gotten there sooner.
blake’s still alive, but he’s in really bad shape. the bike had fallen on his leg in the accident, completely crushing it. infection had set in upon the wounds. As a result, he’s had his left leg amputated mid-thigh. he’s also had a hip replacement.
The rest of his body hasn’t made out much better. his aorta had a gash in it (which I think got fixed), his gallbladder looked gangrenous, and was removed in one of the 5 surgeries last week. his kidneys don’t work, so he’s on dialysis. he can’t even process food through a tube right now — a since a portion of his small intestine had been crushed, nothing goes through. he’s basically lying in bed with a bunch of iv bags hanging off of him. none of his organs are working together right now because of the shock… they could take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to never to get working again.
janet, dan’s girlfriend, says he’s still alive to the world, though, although it’s hard to tell. he’s been sedated with morphine just to give his nerves a rest. she says they go to visit him, however, since he’s been put on the drugs, it’s been harder to interact with him. he’ll recognize them when they visit, but he can’t do more than move his forehead or try to make a face to show it. the hospital put him on a bed that rotates every 5 minutes to prevent blood from pooling in any particular area. he doesn’t like the bed much; he grimaces a bit every time it moves. (I guess that’s a good sign?) I think he can sort of move his right arm in response to things too. His spinal cord and such are ok. now everything else…
the arraignment for the drunk driver was supposed to be today, but it’s been postponed because of blake’s current unstable condition. they’re going to wait and see how blake does in the coming days. in the meantime, the guy’s bail is posted at $100,000.
Blake is also going into surgery today — they found some sort of flesh-eating bacteria going at his amputated leg now, so they’re going to go in and check on it. if it’s bad enough, they’ll have to amputate more of his leg to try to contain it. if they can’t contain it, and the bacteria spreads… -shakes head-
blake’s used up a lot of blood in this whole ordeal. he’s used about 150 units of blood, and about 10 bags of plasma (which costs about $5,000 apiece.. medical bills are going to exceed 1 million), draining the blood supply of orange county. they’re currently getting blood from san diego county, but there’s only a limited supply there as well.
so, people reading this, if you can, please donate blood or plasma, because my friend desperately needs it right now. He’s A positive, so he can take A or O positive or negative. if you are interested, please contact me, and I can give you details on where to donate, how to donate so that it goes to him, etc.
(you should also donate blood and/or plasma just because there are people like this whose lives depend on blood donations… even if you aren’t A or O, please donate and help replenish the supply!)
sorry, I hate to put a depressing blog up, but this has really made me sad. get in touch with me if you want to donate.
