song of the hour: goo

song of the hour: goo goo dolls – here is gone
BOY does johnny reznick know how to write a good hook!!!

oh goodness! I forgot to update music since my birthday! two new additions to my cd collection:

kylie – fever
the first one (the one I specifically requested since that “outta my head” song was, well, being true to its name) was kylie minogue’s new album fever. remember kylie? I was a fan of her back when she made her debut in the 1988. 1988!!! that’s what, fourteen years ago?? my gosh. anyway, she’s still been around, constantly reinventining herself. she’s the australian madonna!

her reintroduction to American audiences pushes her new even more hot-sexified image,* from the J. Lo style dress she wears in the video for “outta my head,” the pictures in the liner notes, to the porn style way she performs some of her songs. and oh yeah, kylie sings too. Fever is a shameless dance/pop album.. but a really GOOD shameless dance/pop album. each track is at once infectious and funky, tricking out with the computerized synth beats and effects while filling out with sexy bass grooves and 70s style anthemic disco funk. it gets a little over the top at certain points, especially with the cheesy “give it to me.” however, that one major misstep is made up for tenfold by the rest of the CD, especially by standouts “love at first sight,” “outta my head,” and “in your eyes.”

avalanches: since i left you
I’ve taken a couple of listens so far, and it’s EXCELLENT. each song is a dizzying amalgam of a crazy assortment of samples — of random music, tv shows, movies.. I heard something like 10,000 different samples?! — but this mixup madness somehow makes for glorious music. I haven’t listened to closely to this cd just yet (haha, I’ve been in a cheesy pop mood, if you couldn’t tell), but i’ll update this review after I do. =)

footnotes:
*kylie’s image for the album right before this one, light years, which came out during the sydney olympics, made full use of her amazing legs and ass-revealing boy shorts. this is how mariah carey SHOULD have worn her “loverboy” era daisy dukes.
