this website needs a serious overhaul. so many dead links, so many outdated links, archaic structure, etc etc etc. i’m really tempted to go the jeff route and take down all the other stuff since i haven’t been updating it anyway…
so totally utterly frustrated right now. this quarter has totally not gone the way i wanted at all. so many stupid little things this quarter have come up to screw things up. this is a long post, so you’ll have to click to continue. =P
first there was the retarded drama-filled vegas trip for my friend’s birthday. it was fun to get out of town and help her celebrate her 21st birthday, but really lame to have to deal with the drama that ensued because of it. it just made for one very unhappy weekend. there’s so little time in the world, so much to accomplish, so many ways to spend time — why does any of it have to be spent on finding stupid ways to be unhappy?? i just don’t get it, and i really hate it when my time is wasted on dealing with unnecessary unhappiness caused by people being blatantly inconsiderate and thoughtless.
then we’ve had contractors come in and out of our place for the past two months doing various fixups to the apartment. first we had to clear out of the place for a a couple nights because our buliding was getting fumigated. then we had to stay out for another extra few nights because the gas company screwed up and turned off gas to the wrong buliding and fumigation had to be delayed. then after the fumigation was done, the gases hadn’t totally dissipated, so we had to spend yet another night in a hotel. then when we came back the next day, we found out the gas company had come that morning to turn on the pilot lights, and since we weren’t there at 8am to let the gas man in and because the gas company was unwilling to send anyone back till monday, we were stuck without hot water for the weekend.
AND THEN just before the the gas was supposed to be turned on, the contractors came to redo all the pipes in the building so they turned off all the water!! so we finally had heat but no water!! AUGH!! so it was a week of being totally displaced in your own damn home, the place where you’re SUPPOSED to find solace.
oh but wait, there’s more!! replacing the pipes in the building is tricky business. walls had to knocked down, pipes had to be sawed through and replaced, metal and wood structures had to be ripped out, so on and so forth. and all of it had to be started early, at 8am, with the water turned off for the duration of the work day. meaning i was awakened at 8am every morning for two weeks in the middle of my midterms and papers to walls being knocked down next door and above us, hearing the contractors yell out expletives as they hit obstacle after obstacle trying to get their work done, ducking falling plaster, cleaning up after the contractor guys when they trample all this dirt and grime into the bathroom and the kitchen (oh! our poor bathroom rugs!!), cleaning up the dust left behind by the drop cloths put down through the living room to the kitchen/bathroom. and dealing with no water AT ALL after 8am every morning until after 4ish. so i took my showers in the evenings instead of twice daily, often went to school with my face unwashed and teeth unbrushed and had to do my morning routine in some quiet hidden bathroom somewhere on campus because it’s totally impossible for me to be a morning person, and tried not to think too much.
i know, i can hear the voices now — ‘you’re so pathetic, you can’t even deal with these little things, people have to deal with a whole lot more than you do, yadda yadda yadda.’ it’s one thing to go camping and expect not having clean water and being dirty and so forth. it’s another to be going through this crap when you’ve got about 800 pages of reading to do each week, three 15-20 page research papers due by the end of the quarter, miscellaneous other 5 page papers, midterms, the random eekly homework assignments that count for half your class grade, an hourlong commute to school each day plus 10/15 minutes paying for/looking for parking in a place where your car won’t get towed, spending another hour in traffic getting home, spending time with my man, and trying to get shit done at a reasonable hour so i can once again attempt to wake up at 7am to beat the plumbers getting here and turning the water off.
then throw in my really silly desire to get back in touch with people again and you get days being spent driving far far away or days spent escorting people around my neighborhood because i tell them they should visit because i’m lonely with NOBODY near me. don’t get me wrong; i’m really happy that i got to see many of them. it’s just that all of it takes time that i couldn’t always afford and i’m not always able to say no.
so the week before thanksgiving one of my friends from back home comes down to spend a weekend hanging out. she needs to get out of town — she’s the kind of person who’s rarely fussy at all, so when does mention something at all, you kind of pay attention. she gets here thursday night, we go out thursday night, friday night, saturday night, hang out during the day, and she leaves sunday. one fun weekend, but also one weekend gone.
then thanksgiving i go home to see my parents. drive down thursday with a friend, who’s himself rushed to get up north, spend thanksgiving dinner with my parents, eat a lot of sticky rice w/meat, bbq chicken, home smoked chicken (sooooo goood!!), eat more sticky rice. spend friday night eating hot pot, then going out with some hs friends to check out the exciting fremont night life (which, for the record, really isn’t too bad). spend saturday feeling sick cuz my sister came home with some sort of cold/flu, so i miss out on going out with aggie, stacey, albert, kipp, taylor and co. hang out a bit with jeff saturday night, go over to vanessa’s to help her fix her computer. sunday is spent driving, driving, and driving… in the RAIN. we drove down to san jose to pick up my LA friend, drive up to davis to drop off my sister, get lunch/dinner with alice (yay! alice!! ^_^), visit jen and see her rock wall, and say hi to chris. leave davis around 6:30 and drive drive drive in the rain and in sunday thanksgiving traffic back to LA. we get back to rb around 2:30am. wake up at 8:30am cuz the contractors are back, tearing down or fixing up someone else’s wall…
so that was this last weekend.
had a final this thursday, the day the contractors came to put in a new wall furnace for our place. was late to my final because i had to move my desk and move the crap off my desk so they could access the furnace. wish they had told me earlier instead of the morning of. came home and found part of the wall knocked out because some of the heater vents had to be replaced. they’re coming back later this week to replaster, and i’ll have to move my desk again…
sop and brian came to hang out thursday night. walked through our neighborhood (yay!) and had dinner at casa pulido. spent rest of the night catching up and swapping music…. good times…
now it’s the weekend before finals. i have a research paper due tuesday, a take home final to turn in and another 15 page research paper to finish before the week is out. vanessa has been down here visiting since wednesday. it’s great hanging out with her, and i’m glad she’s down here because i never see her. tiffany is coming up today from san diego to hang out with nessie and me. and i discovered last night that the pilot light on our water heater went out, so we have no hot water again. i’m guessing it has something to do with the fact that the new furnace was installed thursday.
time, oh time!! this quarter went by so freaking fast, and there’s so little time to catch up!! OH TIME!! how you are not on my side!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JUST SURVIVE UNTIL THURSDAY!!!
Finish your papers and finals, TURN IN your papers and finals (at least vaguely on-time), and then you will have one huge gigantic burden lifted. =D
Hey pearl, hang in there!! sorry to hear about all your house problems on top of all your school work. Sounds sooo overwhelming! :( Better days are sure to come! Good luck with all your papers and your new home!!
