labor day music joys.

have I talked about how much i love labor day countdowns? I swear.. they’re the best thing in radio. I remember getting a crash course introduction to the history of modern rock listening to Live 105’s labor day countdown, 1995, which I taped and listened to over and over for months after. every once in a while, i still pop it in and let all that good music wash over me. :)

anyway, it was a great countdown. I had my eyes opened to peter gabriel, alanis morrissette’s “you oughta know” before that song and the rest of her jagged little pill album inundated the airwaves a year later. I first heard U2’s “sunday, bloody sunday” on the countdown, but failed to get much into it, although I thought the song was pretty cool (little did I know!). I also endured the b-52’s “rock lobster” multiple times while trying to rewind to hear new order’s bizarre love triangle. I wore out the tapes fast forwarding and rewinding to songs like green day – long view. depeche mode – enjoy the silence. breeders – last splash. weezer – say it ain’t so. the cure – just like heaven. radiohead – creep. pearl jam – black. So much good music in one weekend!! I was in heaven.

I only caught bits and pieces of this year’s kroq countdown as we drove to and from san bernadino, but it wasn’t as expansive in its scope as live 105’s… instead of best modern rock songs of all time, this was only the nineties. but it still wasn’t bad: smashing pumpkins – 1979. nirvana – smells like teen spirit. no doubt – don’t speak.

what a wonderful weekend. :) i rediscovered old music gems, and new gem miners like air, chicane, and tiesto. -spazzes out in happiness-
